How To Slay The Spirit Of Offence

Offence is a soul killer, and it is a clear plan designed by the enemy to keep you captive to any hurt you may have previously faced.

In retrospect, I just could not understand how almost one entire organization rejected me because I opened up and spoke of something, I disagreed with respectfully. We all must suffer the test of rejection. Jesus too was rejected by His own. They just did not receive Him for who He actually was, the Son of God. In Christendom there are many prices that will be paid. Some innocently, some through testing. So many.

The teachings of Jesus showed how serious an offence could be. Jesus Himself highlighted it, He warned of offense. In Luke 17:1(KJV), Then said he unto the disciples, “It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come”. Jesus was not lying. He meant every Word of what He said. What great sorrow awaits that person who caused the offense. It is impossible not to offend anyone. There is always going to be someone who will be offended by something.

But what most people do not understand is that offense is a spirit, a very organized spirit that is not of God and it works swiftly and subtly. Offense is a soul killer. It walks with so many other spirits. Anger, bitterness, malice, hatred, resentment, unforgiveness to name a few. All these spirits work together, they all intertwine, attracting even the spirits of deception and manipulation. These spirits work together to cause disunity and separation most times through the spirit of gossiping. The kingdom of darkness is very organized. In summary, when you invite and entertain the spirit of offense, you give other spirits legal access to your heart and mind, eventually taking your soul hostage.

1 Peter 5:8 says, Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. The enemy has one aim and that is to dismantle. He opposes every law that God sets for us to follow because God is a God of unity. So watch out!!!

Most times offense comes through something someone may have said or done. Truth be told though, how many times have you spoken of or done something ill of someone else? The bible proves this. Ecclesiastes 7:21-22(MSG), Don’t eavesdrop on the conversation of others. What if the gossips about you, and you’d rather not hear it? You’ve done that a few times, haven’t you said things behind someone’s back you wouldn’t say to his face? No one is free from this. We are all guilty at some point or another, so why become offended easily? It is not of God.

Solomon in all his wisdom couldn’t make it any clearer. In Proverbs 19:11 (VOICE), God says, A person with discretion is not easily angered; he gains respect by overlooking an offense. In other words, people will respect you more when you are not easily offended. They will not feel insecure around you wondering what will offend you next. Try not to be offended by every conversation, or thing that you may not like or accept. Stop accepting this weakness as the norm, and end up feeling offended all the time. This is not a character of Jesus Christ.

This very organized spirit can be slayed but only through the Word of God and prayer. Jesus was treated so badly. The bible says they mocked and jeered him. Isaiah 52:14 (NLT) says, but many were amazed when they saw him. His face was so disfigured he seemed hardly human, and from his appearance, one would scarcely know he was a man. Yet Jesus did not appear offended, and He did not retaliate. He remained humble. 1 Peter 2:23 (NLT) says, He did not retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly.

We are expected to do the same thing, leave the case in the hand of God who acts fairly, and act the same way Jesus did. I encourage you today, work to slay that spirit of offense, and break every stronghold of the enemy from your life. Hebrews 12:1 (AMP), Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who by faith have testified to the truth of God’s absolute faithfulness], stripping off every unnecessary weight and the sin which so easily and cleverly entangles us, let us run with endurance and active persistence the race that is set before us,

My Prayer

Father, I thank you that through the blood that Jesus shed on the cross for my sins and others, I am able to overlook offenses that will lead to your glory. I thank you that I will remain humble, and seek your Word whenever I am tempted to be offended, so that I can live a victorious life through Jesus Christ in Jesus Name Amen.
